Earl had a very easy going personality and was easy to handle for most students. However, he was a gaited horse and he would mostly pace, which was not a smooth gait. Many students did not appreciate that.His canter was very unbalanced, as he was never really cantered much by previous owners, so he was not a good one to canter on. His limitations in this regard was the main reason for selling him. One of the volunteers loved him to pieces and ended up as his new owner.
